High Blood Pressure at Home Improves the Risk of Myocardial Infarction

Elevated blood pressure indicates high risk for myocardial infarction (heart attack), but high blood pressure sometimes cannot be captured at the doctor's office.

Elevated blood pressure is the leading risk factor of cardiovascular disease, causing 9.4 million deaths in each year high blood pressure– according to the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2010. However, higher than normal blood pressure sometimes remains hidden in clinical environment. If blood pressure taken in the office is normal, but home or ambulatory blood pressure is high, masked hypertension can be diagnosed.

According to a recent study, the findings of which is based on an extended analysis that involved more than 5 thousand patients with untreated hypertension, patients with masked hypertension are more likely to die than those patients with optimal blood pressure.

The Risk Factors of Masked Hypertension

- male gender
- smoking
- diabetes
- history of cardiovascular disease
- obesity
- older age

Current guidelines for the diagnosis and control of hypertension are based on the evaluation of conventionally measured blood pressure, which is the average of 2 consecutive measurements taken in the doctor's office. However, self-measured home blood pressure or ambulatory blood pressure measurement predicts outcome more accurately. Consequently, more emphasis should be taken to filter masked hypertension, particularly in case of those with the risk factors above.

Meditech, the leading manufacturer of ambulatory blood pressure monitors and Holter ECG devices is committed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The company combines ease of use and simplicity with advanced technology.

High Blood Pressure is More Dangerious for Women

High blood pressure (hypertension) is more dangerous for women than men – according to a new study published by scientist at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

„This is the first study to consider sex as an element in the selection of antihypertensive agents or base the choice of a specific drug on the various factors accounting for the elevation in blood pressure" – said Carlos Ferrario, M.D., professor of surgery at Wake Forest Baptist and one of the authors of the study.

According to the latest study, while high blood pressure is less widespread among men, it has become the leading cause of death among women in the United States.

100 men and women age 53 and older have been involved into the comprehensive study. All participants had high blood pressure without any other diseases.

Researchers wanted to know whether the heart or the blood vessels are responsible for high blood pressure. Results show 30 to 40 percent more vascular disease in women compared to men with the same level of elevated blood pressure.

The tests measured hormonal discrepancies betwwen the sexes as well, which also have an effect on the development of cardiovascular diseases.

„Our study findings suggest a need to better understand the female sex-specific underpinnings of hypertensive processes to tailor optimal treatments for this vulnerable population" – Ferrario said and added that traditional hypertention treatment in women needs to be re-evaluated. Sleep Loss is Associated with Increased Risk of High Blood Pressure

According to a recent study sleep deprivation can change your genes. The researchers found that just one week of sleeping fewer than six hours a night results in changes to more than 700 genes. That's alarming news, considering that two in five Americans do not get the recommended seven or more hours of sleep, though sleep loss may result in serious health risks (high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer), eating and mental disorders.

Control Your Emotions to Decrease Blood Pressure

According to a study published by researcher Alison Wood Brooks in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, people who are able to reappraise their anxiety as excitement perform better.

Anxiety disorders which can result in tension, worried thoughts and increased blood pressure are among the most common mental illnesses worldwide. Calming down is a very simple way to control adverse physical changes such as sweaty palms, shaky voice and increased blood pressure, but taking a deep breath and thining good thoughts is often easier said than done.

How to Influence Your Emotions

Emotions can be well controlled and influenced. The way individuals verbalize and think about their feelings helps to construct the way they actually feel. Control Your Emotions to Decrease Your Blood Pressure

Adopt an opportunity mind-set rather than a threat mind-set by saying simply 'I am excited'. With such minimal intervention and modified attitude your performance can be improved and your confidence can be increased. The more often individuals reframe their anxciety as excitement, the more likely they may be to trigger upward motivational sprials, which may result in a happier and more successful life. The researcher says instead of trying to 'Keep Calm and Carry on", the path to success begins by simply saying 'I am excited'.

We Could All Do with a Little Less Pressure

Everyone may experience daily stress which may have an effect on their blood pressure. Hypertension, also known as high or raised blood pressure is a global public health issue, which contributes to the burden of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and premature mortality and disability. Although raised blood pressure results in dangerous risk factors, a lot of people go undiagnosed.
